President Mahmoud Abbas received this evening a telephone call from the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union, Josep Borrell, during which President Abbas briefed Borrell on the latest political developments and Palestinian readiness for an international conference at the beginning of next year in coordination with the International Quartet and on the basis of international legitimacy.
“We seek to hold Palestinian elections as soon as an agreement is reached between all the factions, starting with legislative elections and followed by presidential elections,” President Abbas told Borrell, thanking the European Union for its political stance, economic aid, and building the institutions of the Palestinian state while stressing efforts to develop the partnership between them into a permanent one.
Borrell, for his part, affirmed the European Union’s firm support for the two-state solution based on international law, continuing economic aid and institution building, and improving the conditions of the Palestinians.
He stressed that the European Union fully supports holding Palestinian elections, saying that the European Union is ready to provide the necessary assistance to ensure the success of the elections once the presidential decree on elections is issued.
