PLO Secretary-General Saeb Erekat today welcomed the appointment of Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Vladimir Safronkov as a special envoy for the Middle East.
“The State of Palestine welcomes the appointment of Ambassador Vladimir Safronkov as the Russian Special Representative for MPP. Ambassador Safronkov enjoys a deep knowledge of the region and true commitment to just and lasting peace. We look forward to working with him,” Erekat tweeted.
He also thanked Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin for “his relentless efforts for peace, including in the context of the Quartet.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Safronkov, 56, will represent Russia during bilateral and multilateral contacts, including in the format of the Middle East Quartet of international mediators, working to achieve a lasting and just Palestinian-Israeli and Arab-Israeli peace.
