The Arab League and Jordan welcomed today the United Nations vote renewing the mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) for three more years.
Arab League Deputy Secretary-General for Palestine and Occupied Territories Affairs Said Abu Ali said from Cairo that the overwhelming vote reflects political support for UNRWA until a just solution is found for the Palestinian refugees’ issue based on UN resolution 194.
The vote by 169 in favor, nine abstentions and two against (the US and Israel) is proof that the entire world stands by the Palestinian people, their historical national rights and just cause, he said in a statement.
In Jordan, Foreign Ministry spokesman, Daifallah el-Fayez, said the vote indicates support for the Palestinian refugee to live in dignity.
He said the vote is a clear sign of support for UNRWA to continue with its mission in serving millions of Palestinian refugees in education, health and social welfare.
He stressed that the issue of the Palestinian refugees is one of the most important of the final status issues that should be solved based on related United Nations resolutions, particularly 194, and the Arab Peace Initiative that give the refugee the right of return and compensation.
