Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh today called on Ireland to recognize the state of Palestine and to make all efforts to formulate an active and supportive European position to recognize Palestine and protect the two-state solution.
During a videoconference meeting, Shtayyeh called on the Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney, to pressure Israel to allow the Palestinian people in Jerusalem to participate in the upcoming elections, whether as candidates or voters, in addition to sending international observers to oversee the electoral process.
The Prime Minister briefed the Irish minister on the developments in restoring bilateral relations with the United States, especially with regard to the reopening of diplomatic missions in Washington and Jerusalem, in addition to the resumption of US aid to Palestine and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
He reviewed the ongoing arrangements for the donors ‘conference to be held at the end of this month, with the participation of the United States, in addition to the government’s efforts to confront the spread of coronavirus pandemic and the efforts to hold elections.
The Prime Minister discussed ways to activate the international quartet and provide multilateral international sponsorship for the peace process, with clear reference on the basis of international law and United Nations resolutions.
For his part, Coveney affirmed Ireland’s readiness to provide all forms of assistance to the Palestinian government in order to facilitate the holding of general elections and revive the political process.
