President Mahmoud Abbas discussed today with King Abdullah II of Jordan the latest developments of the Palestinian cause as well as a number of issues of common interest.
During their meeting in the Jordanian Red Sea port city of Aqaba, President Abbas thanked King Abdullah for his unwavering stances in support of the Palestinian people and their right to freedom and independence.
President Abbas stressed that these supportive stances reaffirm the strength of relations between the leaderships and peoples of the two countries.
For his part, King Abdullah stressed the need to intensify international efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace and end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of the two-state solution.
He affirmed that Jordan stands with all its energies and capabilities alongside the Palestinian people to obtain their just and legitimate rights and establish their independent, sovereign and viable state, on the territories occupied in 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
King Abdullah also highlighted the necessity of preserving the existing legal and historical status of Jerusalem, stressing the Kingdom’s rejection of all unilateral measures aimed at changing the identity of the city and its holy places, including Al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam’s third holiest site.
The King of Jordan reaffirmed that his country continues to play its historical and religious role in protecting the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, out of the Hashemite custodianship of these sanctities.
