Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh recommended late last night to President Mahmoud Abbas to extend by another month the two-month long state of emergency imposed to fight coronavirus pandemic, as announced by Shtayyeh’s office.
The recommendation to extend the state of emergency was made following a meeting for the national emerge committee, heads of security forces and the Ministry of Health and after getting the opinion of the government.
President Abbas is expected to look into this recommendation today and if a decision was made to extend the state of emergency, the government will continue its current measures of gradual easing of the lockdown while keeping in mind the health of the general public, said the statement.
The current state of emergency ended midnight Sunday. It was first imposed in early March for one month and extended for one month in April.
