Saeb Erekat, Secretary General of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO)’s Executive Committee, has called upon the Israeli authorities to immediately release Mohammad Majed Hassan, a Palestinian prisoner in its jails who was diagnosed with coronavirus (COVID-19).
Erekat said in a tweet that the continued detention of Hasan by Israeli occupation authorities was a blatant violation of Israel’s “obligations under international humanitarian law.”
“We hold Israel fully responsible for his life and demand his immediate release.”
Over 15,000 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Israel, which occupies the West Bank, ever since the start of the pandemic in Israel in February. Ever since, Palestinian leaders have repeatedly called for the immediate release of prisoners in Israeli detention to save their lives in light of the wide spread of the pandemic.
Over 5,000 Palestinian and Arab prisoners are incarcerated in Israeli jails for defending their homeland and for their activism in the resistance against the Israeli occupation.
