Saeb Erekat, Secretary-General of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), called on the Irish goverment to recognize the state of Palestine on the pre-June 4th 1967 borders.
During a meeting with Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney and his accompanying delegation, Erekat called on Ireland to impose a complete boycott on Israeli settlements and to work with the rest of the European Union to oblige the Israeli government not to obstruct the holding of presidential and legislative elections in East Jerusalem.
He praised Ireland’s firm position in support of achieving peace on the basis of ending the Israeli occupation and embodying the independence of the state of Palestine pre-June 4th 1967 border living side by side with Israel in peace and security.
For his part, Coveney affirmed his country’s firm stance based on international law and UN resolutions, and its categorical rejection to all that contradicts with it, stressing the illegality of settlements or any unilateral declarations made by the US.
