On Friday, Hundreds of Palestinian worshippers entered Bab al-Rahmeh (Gate of Mercy) in the eastern part of Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem’s Old City for and performed Friday prayers there for the first time since 2003, which has been closed off since 2003 by the Israeli occupation, Bab al-Rahmeh is a large hall that is part of the bigger Bab al-Dhahabi ”Golden Gate”.
The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Mohammad Hussein led the worshippers, activists, and other religious leaders there, defying the Israeli ban of Muslim worshipping in the area, raised the Palestinian flag, and chanted religious and national slogans in support of Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque.
On Wednesday, Palestinians removed a metal gate Israeli police had placed at the entrance to Bab al-Rahmeh and performed prayers in the region.
Earlier this week, clashes erupted between worshipers and Israeli police forces as a result of assault on the Palestinian worshipers following prayers.
