The Embassy of the State of Palestine and the Fatah Movement in Egypt held a national event on Thursday to mark the 77th anniversary of the Nakba. The event took place at the Palestinian Embassy in Cairo and was attended by H.E. Ambassador Diab Al-Louh, Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Egypt, Dr. Mohamed Ghareeb, Secretary of Fatah in Egypt, several prominent Palestinian national figures, and members of the Palestinian community in Egypt.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Al-Louh stated:
“The Palestinian people have been living through a continuous Nakba since 1948, enduring one catastrophe after another. What Gaza has witnessed since October 7 is an unprecedented Nakba—an Israeli attempt to execute an old plan aimed at emptying the land of its indigenous people. We remain steadfast in our homeland. We will not leave, and we will continue to hold on to our right to return. The Nakba is an ongoing crime, and the right of return is sacred—no right is lost as long as someone demands it.”
He also emphasized Egypt’s historic role in supporting the rights of the Palestinian people, expressing deep gratitude to President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi for standing firm against the Israeli plan to forcibly displace Palestinians and strip them of their land.
Ambassador Al-Louh added, “We call for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, living in peace and security alongside the nations of the world, with freedom, dignity, and full integration into the international community under the umbrella of international legitimacy. We also urge the international community to act swiftly to implement relevant UN resolutions on Palestine, and to convene an international peace conference based on the agreed-upon references, the principle of land for peace, the two-state solution, and the Arab Peace Initiative.”
Dr. Mohamed Ghareeb emphasized in his speech:
“Today, we commemorate the Nakba, which continues to live in our memories and hearts despite the passage of 77 years. We are currently enduring an even more severe Nakba, as the Palestinian people pay a heavy price every hour in blood, hunger, and unprecedented suffering.”
He affirmed that, despite the hardships faced in exile and refugee camps, Palestinians remain firmly committed to the dream of return, holding fast to their identity, heritage, and belief in the justice of their cause.
Dr. Ghareeb added:
“We are witnessing another Nakba live on screens around the world—a brutal aggression employing the most horrific and advanced methods of killing and destruction. The massacres have claimed thousands of lives, including a third of whom are children and another third women.”
He also reaffirmed that the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) remains the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people and has achieved international recognition through the sacrifices of its people. He reiterated the Palestinian leadership’s commitment to international law and the right to return, and to establishing an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital on 22% of historic Palestine—half of what was outlined in UN Resolution 181 in 1947.
Despite accepting the peace process, he noted, the world remains unable to compel Israel to comply with international law, end its occupation, and achieve a just and lasting peace.
Dr. Ghareeb extended his appreciation to President El-Sisi and the Egyptian government, praising Egypt’s unwavering position since the beginning of the aggression on Gaza. He highlighted President El-Sisi’s early warnings that what is happening in Gaza constitutes a new Nakba aimed at erasing the Palestinian identity and forcibly displacing the people of Gaza.
He concluded by expressing his deep respect and gratitude to the Palestinian leadership, especially President Mahmoud Abbas, for holding firmly and wisely to the Palestinian cause and national rights.
