The Palestinian presidency said today that reaching peace first with the Palestinian people and their legitimate leadership is the road to real peace and stability in the region.
Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesman for President Mahmoud Abbas, stated that “peace and stability in the region could only be achieved through first making peace with the Palestinian people and their legitimate leadership and resolving the Palestinian question based on resolutions of international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative.” Abu Rudeineh was reacting to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s remarks to an Arabic TV station in Israel in which he said that the Palestinian state will be achieved through peace with the Arabs, not with the Palestinians.
These Israeli statements fall within the framework of the Israeli government’s continued evasion of its peace obligations as per United Nations resolutions, said Abu Rudeineh.
He stressed that a comprehensive peace in the region can only be realized through a peace agreement that meets the Palestinian people’s aspirations for freedom and independence.
The path to peace based on UN resolutions lies solely through the legitimate Palestinian leadership headed by President Mahmoud Abbas, added Abu Rudeineh, noting that any attempt to search for illusory peace would not lead to security and stability in the region.
“This is the genuine peace that achieves peace and security for all, otherwise the region will remain caught in a spiral of tension, violence, and instability,” the presidential spokesman concluded his statement.
