Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit and the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, discussed today evening the latest political developments in the Palestinian cause.
In a telephone conversation, Aboul Gheit briefed the UN coordinator on the outcomes of the recent extraordinary Arab foreign ministers meeting, which restored momentum to the Palestinian cause as a central issue for upcoming joint Arabs action, according to a statement from Aboul Gheit’s office.
The Arab League chief affirmed that the Arab foreign ministers’ meeting has renewed Arab consensus on the determinants of the peace process and the two-state solution.
Aboul Gheit highlighted the importance of the recent Palestinian reconciliation talks in Cairo, and the agreement to hold elections, pointing out that this path is fully supported by the Arab League.
He asserted that such moves are important to renew Palestinian legitimacy and will strengthen the Palestinian position in any future negotiations.
The Secretary-General praised Wennesland’s condemnations of the Israeli settlement expansion that destroys the chances of achieving a two-state solution, affirming that everyone is expecting the launch of a credible negotiation process that would lead to ending the Israeli occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state on the borders of June 4, 1967.
