The Presidency of the State of Palestine expressed today its appreciation of the statement of the five main powers of the European Union earlier today, which condemned Israel’s okaying of thousands of new housing units in the occupied West Bank settlements.
Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesman for President Mahmoud Abbas, said the position expressed by the foreign ministers of Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy and Spain was in harmony with the resolutions of the international community, the latest of which was the UNSC Resolution 2334 which called for an end to the Israeli settlement policy in the occupied territories.
“This position is consistent with the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people that have been approved by international legitimacy, and confirms that everything that Israel, the occupying power, does is null and violates all international resolutions,” said Abu Rudeineh.
The presidential spokesman praised the “brave and significant European position that encourages stability in the region,” and called for “exerting pressure on the Israeli government to submit to the international will, international consensus, international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative.”
“The only way to stability and peace in the region is the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the borders of June 4, 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital,” he concluded.
