President Mahmoud Abbas will participate in the virtual summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, which will be convened at the initiative of the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in his capacity as the current chair of the movement.
President Abbas will deliver a speech before the special online Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit, which will focus on the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
As part of his speech, Abbas will brief attending heads of states and governments on the repercussions of Israeli occupation authorities’ prospective move to apply sovereignty over, or in other words to annex, the Jordan Valley and the illegal colonial settlements in the occupied West Bank.
He will also stress the necessity of convening an international peace conference on the basis of international law and UN resolutions with the purpose of ending the Israeli occupation and establishing the independent Palestinian state living side by side in peace and security with Israel, with East Jerusalem as its capital and on the basis of the border of 4 June 1967, and resolving all final-status issues, particularly the refugees and prisoners issues, in accordance with all relevant UN resolutions.
He will review before the summit, which will be held under the motto of “United against COVID-19”, Palestine’s efforts in terms of battling the spread of the novel coronavirus.
The summit is expected to conclude with a political declaration as well as an identified set of measures for enhanced coordination among NAM member states in their common fight against COVID-19.
The videoconference will be joined by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, President of the UN General Assembly Tijjani Muhammad-Bande of Nigeria, Chairperson of the African Union President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and High Representative of the European Union Josep Borrell.
NAM represents the biggest grouping of countries outside the United Nations, comprising 120 developing countries from Asia, Africa and Latin America.
