President Mahmoud Abbas said on the occasion of the Palestinian Prisoner Day that the issue of the Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli detention remains a top priority for the people and leadership of Palestine.
“The issue of the prisoners will remain our first priority despite all the difficulties we are facing. This is to preserve the just, inalienable rights of our people,” said President Abbas on this occasion.
The President reiterated the firm position of the leadership that no peace agreement will be signed with Israel until all the Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails are released.
He praised the prisoners as freedom fighters who have “lost years of their lives for the cause of their people, for their legitimate rights to freedom and independence and the establishment of the Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.”
The President called on the international community and all human rights advocates to pressure Israel to abide by the principles of the international law regarding the protection of prisoners and their health wellbeing, especially during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
“We will not give in to any pressure exerted on us to abandon our heroic prisoners and their families, and we will continue to do everything necessary to provide them with a decent life.”
