Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh called on Spain to break the status quo and recognize the state of Palestine in order to preserve and protect the two-state solution from being eroded, particularly following Israel’s intentions to annex all the settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories and a large part of the Jordan Valley.
During a meeting today with Spain’s newly appointed Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya on the sideline of the 56th Munich Security Conference (MSC), the premier said the Madrid Conference of 1991 is an example to build upon. “We want an international conference similar to the Madrid peace conference to be led by the international Quartet and other countries on the basis of international law and UN resolutions as a real and serious alternative to US unilateral plans.
They also discussed introducing an international and European strategy in order to settle the conflict and achieve a just, comprehensive and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue in accordance with international terms of reference and UN resolutions.
