Italy expressed deep concern over the Israeli occupation government’s announcement to proceed with the construction of 5,000 housing units in the illegal settlements of Har Homa and Givat Hamatos in occupied East Jerusalem, said Italy’s foreign ministry in a press statement issued today.
In line with the EU position, Italy reiterated that settlements in the occupied territories are illegal under international law and constitute a serious obstacle to the prospect of a sustainable and acceptable solution for both sides. “We therefore urge the Israeli authorities to reconsider the declared decision.”
The press statement stated that Italy remains convinced that only a two-state solution, with Jerusalem as the capital of both sides, can ensure a just and lasting peace based on internationally recognized standards and relevant United Nations resolutions.
