Fatah Central Committee member Hussein al-Sheikh today held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow.
Al-Sheikh, who serves as the Chairman of the Civil Affairs Commission, discussed with Lavrov strengthening traditional Palestinian-Russian relations, with focus on deepening political dialogue on Middle East issues.
Lavrov reiterated his country’s commitment to the principle of the two-state solution as the basis for solving the Middle East conflict within the framework of international law, including the UN Security Council resolutions, the UN General Assembly resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
He stressed that there was no alternative to direct Palestinian-Israeli talks under the sponsorship of the Quartet and highlighted the importance of pushing forward the intra-Palestinian unity under the umbrella of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
Al-Sheikh also held a meeting with Russian Special Presidential Envoy for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.
