The Palestinian Foreign Ministry expressed hope today that the Israeli public will elect a leader who will be committed to peace with the Palestinians.
It said in a statement that while the Palestinian leadership is committed to peace and is ready to do everything necessary to achieve a just and comprehensive peace on the basis of a two-state solution and in accordance with international terms of reference, the question remains: “Is the Israeli voter going to elect today an Israeli peace partner who will be able to meet the requirements of peace?”
It said that while it believes that the Israeli elections being held today are an internal Israeli affair, their results will nevertheless have an impact on the chances of resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the future of the relationship between the Palestinian and Israeli peoples.
It said that “whatever the results of the Israeli elections are and the shape of the next coalition government, the decision of the Israeli voter will be a test of the ability of the international community and the United Nations and its institutions in honoring and implementing the international peace references and resolutions, especially those that empower the Palestinian people under occupation to exercise their right to self-determination, just like other people of the world, and to oblige Israel, the Occupying Power, to end its occupation and obey the international will of peace.”
