RAMALLAH, Wednesday, November 21, 2018 (WAFA) – Samir Sirsawi, 52, a Palestinian from the northern Israeli port city of Haifa, was released from prison on Wednesday after completing 30 years in detention, according to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS).
Sirsawi was supposed to be released in 2014 in a deal brokered by former United States Secretary of State John Kerry in which Israel would release all Palestinian prisoners held since prior to the signing of the Oslo accords in 1993.
However, Israel reneged on the deal, which was the reason for the failure of Kerry’s peace plan and the current deadlock in the peace process.
With the release of Sirsawi, 27 Palestinians remain incarcerated since before 1993, 12 of them from cities inside Israel, including Karim Younis, the longest serving Palestinian prisoner in Israel.
