France welcomed the decision to hold Palestinian elections in May and July.
“France welcomes the adoption by President Mahmoud Abbas of the decree providing for the holding of legislative, presidential, and Palestinian National Council elections from May 2021,” said a French Foreign Ministry statement.
“This decision must now be translated into action to allow the elections to be organized throughout the Palestinian Territories.”
The statement said that France calls on all Palestinian political players “to act constructively to allow Palestinian people to appoint their representatives.”
It also called on the Israeli authorities “to facilitate the holding of ballots throughout the Palestinian Territories, including in East Jerusalem.”
It said that alongside its European partners, France stands ready to support the preparation and organization of free and impartial elections.
