President Mahmoud Abbas today reiterated Palestine’s readiness to engage in a genuine political process.
Speaking in a phone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, President Abbas discussed the remarkable bilateral relations and briefed President Putin on the latest developments on the Palestinian arena as well as on the Palestinian leadership’s efforts to achieve national unity.
He reiterated Palestine’s readiness to engage in a genuine political process under the Quartet’s sponsorship based on the United Nations resolutions and international law, and stressed the importance of convening an international peace conference in the first half of 2021 to launch the peace process.
He thanked Putin for Russia’s firm positions in support of the Palestinian people’s just rights, pointing that such positions underscores the solid bonds of friendship between Palestine and Russia in many fields of mutual concern, as well as for his keenness to advance the efforts aimed at achieving just and lasting peace in the region based on the UN resolutions.
He expressed his gratitude to Russia for ongoing support to the Palestinian people, including dispatching medical personnel to the Palestinian territories to help fight the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak, expressing hope to receive the Russian COVID-19 vaccine, Sputnik V, as soon as possible.
President Putin reiterated his country’s positions in support of peace and stability in the region based on the relevant UN resolutions and international law, and under the auspices of the Quartet, as well as of convening an international peace conference, particularly that Russia has contributed to the UN Resolution 1850.
He stressed his country’s keenness in providing medical assistance to Palestine to help rein in the spread of Covid-19 pandemic, and affirmed his country’s readiness to provide sufficient quantities of Sputnik V in line with the understandings reached between the competent Palestinian and Russian authorities.
Both presidents touched upon the latest developments regarding achieving intra-Palestinian reconciliation, as President Abbas stressed the importance of Russia and Egypt’s support to this issue.
President Abbas extended warmest greetings to Putin on Christmas and the New Year.
