Prime minister Mohammed Shtayyeh urged the European Union to pressure Israel to enable the PA to hold elections in Jerusalem.
The premier during a meeting held in his office in Ramallah with EU ambassadors, consuls and representatives called on the EU to prepare to contribute in the observation and supervision of the election process, stressing that the Palestinian people have had a long experience in elections over the past years; whether in the past legislative and presidential elections or in the elections for local councils, student councils, and chambers of commerce.
He said that the Palestinian leadership, headed by president Mahmoud Abbas, has a firm political stance to hold elections and overcome any challenges imposed by any party.
“The democracy of the Palestinian people has been a victim of division and elections are our way out and gate to protect our cause and the unity of our people,” he added.
The premier briefed the EU delegation on the government’s performance report for the past period and the results of the measures taken by the government to achieve the gradual economic disengagement from the [Israeli] occupation, to strengthen the national product, and to promote direct trade with the world and Arab countries in particular.
