Hanan Ashrawi, member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) said the recent statement made by U.S President Donald Trump in France reflects his ignorance and ed knowledge of the complexities and the historical background of the Palestinian question.
“This ignorance has also been evident in the actions and the biased positions taken by Trump and his administration towards critical issues, including the endorsement of Israel’s illegal annexation of occupied Jerusalem as well as the malicious campaign against UNRWA and Palestine refugees,” Ashrawi said in a statement.
Trump told reporters on the sidelines of the annual G7 summit in Paris that both Israelis and Palestinians were interested in reaching a peace deal. Trump said he “thinks the Palestinians will be happy to get US funding again and make a deal,” according to Reuters.
Ashrawi stressed that the current U.S administration has proven to be complicit in Israeli crimes and has lost the credibility and capability to be a potential peace broker.
“Using humanitarian aid as a coercive tool and de-funding schools and hospitals has destructive implications and will aggravate the deteriorating humanitarian situation here. It is time for the Trump administration to realize the fact that Palestinian rights and dignity are not for sale.”
American policies under this administration are dangerously delusional, as also evident in the State Department’s recent omission of all reference to Palestine and its people she said
“This omission will not make us disappear. It will not alter the fact that Palestine is recognized by 140 states and represented in international bodies, including the UN.”
“Throughout history, Palestinians have remained steadfast and resilient. We will continue to pursue our non-negotiable rights of self-determination and freedom with unwavering resolve. To that end, Palestine will continue to work with responsible international partners who share our commitment to the international rules-based order and recognize the Palestinian people’s inalienable rights to self-determination and freedom,” the stamen concluded.
